Let’s face it. Hunting seasons aren’t always the safest in most regions in the United States. There are different kinds of hunting weapons involved. And none of them is, at any point in time, safe for people. Even with that said, the New York’s hunting season in 2018 is said to be one of the safest ever in its history since archery seasons started.
Two of the fatalities were self-inflicted, and the incident in the Tioga County Town of Barton involved two people and an apparent failure to positively identify the target, the DEC said.
Of the total 13 shooting incidents, seven involved two parties and six were self-inflicted. The vast majority of the two-person accidents involved victims who were not wearing hunter orange.
The report shows that two of the casualties were self-inflicted as a result of mishandling of the hiking firearms.
The 2018 hunting seasons in New York tallied the lowest number of recorded hunting-related shooting incidents (HRSIs) and tied the 2016 mark – 13 – as the safest on record, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. DEC documented five tree stand incidents and zero fatalities in 2018, down from 12 tree stand incidents the previous year.
Also, there was a lot of emphasis on safety in 2018. This also explains why New York was among the safest hunting ground.
David Figura, an author from Syracuse provided a list of the shooting related accidents that happened during the 2018 hunting season in the same city.
Nevertheless, there were three fatalities. Two were self-inflicted, the result of unsafe handling of firearms. The other was a two-party firearm incident caused by one hunter’s failure to positively identify the target.
DEC also documented five tree stand incidents and zero fatalities in 2018, down from 12 tree stand incidents the previous year.
